NOTES

The USP of Patrick Keiller’s Robinson In Space (1997) was its foregrounding of elements of British life normally hidden in plain sight. The film unfolded via panoramas of industrial estates, trade parks and motorway services, relieved only by the oblique commentary of its unseen characters.

Robinson was ahead of the curve. Over the past 20 years its core insight, that large sections of the UK’s economy enjoy rude health but are in states of disengagement from the lives of its citizenry, has become commonplace. Whether or not their copywriters are conscious of this shift, many business-to-business (B2B) websites appear as homologues of the arid, impersonal spaces which Keiller’s camera captured two decades ago. Their editors presumably regard this refusal of human dimension as a positive.

Those businesses which operate in Robinsonian territory but are still obliged to engage with the public have a harder time of it. Providers of corporate hospitality, fleet motor repairs and the like present copywriters with a particular challenge. What is the core function around which the site is to be organized?

Murco’s copywriter has flunked this pons asinorum spectacularly. A business which earns its keep by the provision of services simply cannot afford to ignore its public in the fashion seen here, no matter how much it may aspire to frictionless B2B trading. Note all the absences. No filling station locator; no reminders of opening hours; no announcements of special offers; no loyalty or company account cards. Murco is failing completely to address the people from whom it earns its money.

Our rewrite is necessarily sketchy, but starts from the assumption that potential Murco dealerships can be safely sidelined into a ‘Becoming A Partner’ section. We believe dealers to be sufficiently grown-up to appreciate that Murco maintains a primary focus on its customers.

Would you want a retail partner that behaved otherwise?
