2018 was a duff year for help-to-buy homebuilder Persimmon. Widespread misgivings about executive pay and persistent niggles about workmanship both contributed to a steep decline in the company’s share price.
This blog is just as prone to 20:20 hindsight as other commentaries, and combing copy for clues to corporate financial health is a mug’s game. Nevertheless, it’s impossible to read Persimmon’s inept self-description without making inferences about the state of the business.
The text begins with a messy first para in which literal and rhetorical uses of the word we clash and jar, a confusion compounded by the slippery you of the second. (Uncertainty about the relationship between the groups identified by those two pronouns would have been charming in a union publication of the ’70s or ’80s, but it’s downright creepy in a communication from a profitmaking company.)
Sensitive readers will also note indications that an original text was worked over by a second writer, publicity-oriented but tin-eared. There’s the too-much-info awkwardness of that extensive range of two, three, four and five bedroom homes, the redundant coinage properties to call home in the sixth para, the (unexplained) initial caps on the phrase Finishing Touches…
Our rewrite is an attempt to restore what we take to have been the plain good sense of the original. Mostly this involved hacking out the flab, 20% or so of the bodyweight, but we also did some judicious rewrites where we thought clarity was needed.
